THE LADY WITH A LAP DOG is an intimate, 75-minute musical about the transformative power of love, based on the classic short story by Russian writer Anton Chekhov. Two people meet in the resort town of Yalta in 1899 and have a summer affair. They were both married at a young age to people who were strangers at the time. As they get to know one another, they discover that, for the first time, they have a partner with whom they can speak easily of wants, needs, joys, and fears. This experience changes them. They look at the world, their relationships, and ultimately themselves with fresh eyes, and begin to question everything. How does one find a balance between desire and responsibility? What does it mean to be virtuous? Can an act of unselfish love ever be a mistake?
